About Us Our History

MWH is the product of a historic merger between Montgomery Watson Ltd, a world leader in water and wastewater issues, and Harza Engineering Company a global expert in energy and infrastructure engineering. The merger, completed in 2001, resulted in a collective track record of over 231 years and an overall strengthening of all core service areas.

Montgomery Watson was consistently recognised as a world leader in water and wastewater issues. The firm was named
‘2001 Consultant of the Year’ by leading European trade publication New Civil Engineer.

Founded in 1920, Harza Engineering was renowned for its strength in energy-related services. Founder Leroy Harza
has been called the ‘Dean of American hydraulic engineers’ by Engineering News-Record. Over eighty years later,
Harza Engineering continues in the tradition of excellence in the industry, now coupled with the added support
of Montgomery Watson.

MWH can trace its history in Australia back to 1907, when A.K.T. Sampbell began undertaking water supply projects in Victoria.
The company he founded eventually became Scroggie Engineering, which merged with Montgomery Watson in 1993, to form
Montgomery Watson Australia.

Montgomery Watson (as James M. Montgomery) had also worked in Australia on the Clean Waterways Programme
for Sydney Water. This programme laid the foundations for the company to expand in NSW and undertake further
major infrastructure programs for Sydney Water.
